Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about the PTE exam and how to prepare.
What is the difference between PTE Academic and PTE Core?
PTE Academic is designed for university admissions and academic study worldwide. PTE Core is a newer test specifically designed for Canadian immigration and everyday English use. While Academic uses lectures and academic texts, Core uses everyday scenarios like emails and common conversations.
Is PTE accepted for Canadian PR?
Yes, PTE Core is fully approved by IRCC for all Canadian economic migration programs, including Express Entry (FSW, CEC, FST) and Provincial Nominee Programs.
How long does it take to get PTE results?
One of the biggest advantages of PTE is speed. Most test-takers receive their results within 48 hours, and sometimes in as little as a few hours.
How accurate is PTE Shark's AI scoring?
Our proprietary AI engine is designed to closely mimic the official Pearson algorithm. It evaluates your speaking based on oral fluency and pronunciation using the same acoustic models, and checks your writing against complex grammar and vocabulary rubrics.
Do I need to practice 'Read Aloud' every day?
Yes! Read Aloud is the most heavily weighted question type in the exam because it contributes significantly to both your Speaking and Reading scores. We recommend practicing at least 10 Read Aloud tasks daily.
What is a good PTE score?
A 'good' score depends on your goals. For Australian PR, a score of 79+ (equivalent to IELTS 8) gives maximum points. For Canadian PR (Express Entry), achieving a CLB 9 requires specific scores in PTE Core (Listening 82-88, Reading 78-87, Writing 88-89, Speaking 84-88).
Can I use templates for the writing section?
Yes, using structured templates for 'Summarize Written Text' and 'Write Essay' is highly recommended. The AI scores based on structure, grammar, and vocabulary range, not creativity. A good template ensures you meet all these criteria.
Does the microphone position matter?
Absolutely. Poor microphone positioning is a leading cause of low speaking scores. Keep the microphone about 2 inches from the corner of your mouth (not directly in front) to avoid breathing noises and plosive 'p' or 'b' sounds.
How do I improve my Oral Fluency?
Oral fluency is about rhythm and phrasing, not speed. Speak at a moderate pace, group words into meaningful chunks, and avoid long pauses (over 3 seconds). Do not go back to correct yourself if you make a mistake.
What is the hardest section in PTE?
Many students find the Speaking section challenging because of the strict time limits, and the Reading section difficult due to the large amount of text to process quickly. However, with AI-guided practice, these sections can become your highest-scoring areas.
Can I take PTE at home?
Pearson offers PTE Academic Online, which can be taken at home. However, it is NOT accepted for visa or immigration purposes (like Australian or Canadian PR). It is only accepted by certain universities.
How is 'Write from Dictation' scored?
You get points for every correct word you type in the correct sequence. It is the most important task for your Listening score and also contributes heavily to Writing. Practice this daily.
Does PTE Shark offer mock tests?
Yes, we offer full-length, timed mock tests that simulate the real exam environment. After completing a test, you receive a detailed score report breaking down your performance across all communicative and enabling skills.
